Scaffolding pipes are galvanized steel tubes hot rolled into round shapes with a standard diameter of O.D 48.3mm (BS1139 / EN39).
They are joined by scaffolding couplers and fittings in construction to form all types of scaffolding.
The longest scaffolding pipe is 6.4m(21’) and 6m(20′). The length can be cut into customized sizes as well from 0.3m to 5.8m.
Steel grades of the scaffold tubes include S235, S355, STK400, STK 500, etc.

Painted and Galvanized Scaffolding Pipes
For anti-corrosion purposes, black steel scaffold tubes can be treated with further surface protection to extend the life of the scaffolding pipes.
According to the surface treatment way, there are definitely three types of scaffold tubes. Galvanized scaffold tubes, painted scaffold tubes, and powder-coated scaffold tubes.
Galvanized Scaffolding Tubes
Galvanized scaffolding tubes are black steel scaffolding pipes with zinc protection on the surface.
According to galvanizing temperature, condition, and process, there are three types of galvanized scaffold tubes: Hot dip galvanized scaffold tubes, GI Pipe, and E-galvanized pipes.
Hot Dip Galvanized Scaffold Tubes (HDG Tubes)
Hot-dip galvanized scaffolding pipes are also called HDG scaffold tubes. It is a step to cover black scaffold tubes with zinc thickness.
Hot dip galvanized scaffold pipes process:
Steel black pipes go through a series of cleaning steps: degreasing, pickling, and fluxing.
Dip the steel black tubes in the molten 450oC zinc bath.
Black steel scaffold tubes are covered with more than 40 micros (280g/sqm) thickness zinc.
The zinc protects the scaffold pipes from rust.
With the extra zinc covered on, the weight of hot dip galvanized scaffolding pipes is about 3% heavier than black scaffold tubes.
GI Scaffolding Pipes
GI scaffolding pipes is called premier galvanized(pre-gal) scaffolding steel pipes. They are made of premier galvanized (GI) steel coils/plates.
Compare to hot dip galvanized scaffold tubes, GI pipes are with thinner zinc thickness. about 6-35 micro (42 g/m² to 245 g/m²). Thus the anti-corrosion function is not as good as hot-dip galvanized scaffolding pipes.
But GI scaffolding pipes are at less cost and cheaper price. That is why it is very popularly used.
GI pipes are normally for thinner wall-thickness steel scaffold tubes. The thickness of the GI pipes is up to 2.5mm.
Nevertheless, GI pipes are better than painted scaffold tubes in anti-rusty. That is why both hot-dip galvanized tubes and GI pipes are used widely in all pipe scaffolding constructions. Include civil, industrial, and infrastructural construction, pipe racking in onshore and offshore projects, chemical plant building, shipping building, maintenances of pipelines, equipment, building, etc.
