Tensile Properties
- Tensile strength: 485 MPa [70, 000 psi];
- Yield strength: 275 MPa [40, 000 psi];
- Elongation in 2 in. [50 mm]: 30 % min (longitudinal) or 16.5 % min (transverse);
Bend ability
- For pipe NPS 2 [DN 50] and under, a sufficient length of pipe shall stand being bent cold through 90° around a cylindrical mandrel, the diameter of which is twelve times the outside diameter of the pipe, without developing cracks.
- For pipe whose diameter exceeds 25 in. [635 mm] and whose diameter-to-wall thickness ratio, is 7.0 or less, the bend test shall be conducted. The bend test specimens shall be bent at room temperature through 180° with the inside diameter of the bend being 1 in. [25 mm] without cracking on the outside portion of the bent portion.
Flattening Test
Although testing is not required, the pipe shall be capable of meeting the flattening test requirements of Supplementary Requirement S3, if tested.
Production Methods
Cold Drawn (CD) ASTM A106 GR.B Pipe
- The cold drawing process starts with a hot-finished seamless pipe blank, which is then drawn through a high-precision die (and often over a mandrel) at room temperature (or slightly above room temperature) without additional heating.
- This process involves multi-pass drawing, with intermediate annealing treatments to reduce work hardening and improve ductility. The final cold draw pass is followed by heat treatment at 650°C (1200°F) or higher to optimize mechanical properties.
Hot Finished (HF) ASTM A106 GR.B Pipe
- Hot finished pipes are processed at temperatures above the steel's recrystallization point (typically above 900°C/1652°F) after the initial piercing of the steel billet. The heated hollow shell is shaped and sized using rollers while still in a malleable, plastic state, allowing for easier formation of larger diameters and thicker walls.
- Unlike cold drawn pipes, hot finished pipes generally do not require post-processing heat treatment unless specifically requested, and they cool naturally after forming to relieve residual stress.
